Mike and Mal Leyland, also known as The Leyland Brothers, were Australian explorers and documentary film-makers, best known for their popular television show, Ask the Leyland Brothers. The show ran on Australian television from 1976 until 1984.
At Portland in Victoria the Leylands seek out a retired man who makes magnificent violins in his small workshop. He fashions beautiful instruments from single blocks of wood which are held in very high regard by the top musicians in the country. In Tasmania an elderly person who seems to thrive on hard work. At 83 a spinster in the bush lands of eastern Tasmania runs a farm on her own and breeds ponies. North into the tropics of Western Australia where the energy from the sun is put to work to extract salt from the ocean water at Dampier. The entire fascinating process is shown in this multi million dollar project that makes such good use of solar energy. The Leylands film for the first time some significant Aboriginal carvings and old camp site excavations which were discovered by the salt miners in the west.
