Mike and Mal Leyland, also known as The Leyland Brothers, were Australian explorers and documentary film-makers, best known for their popular television show, Ask the Leyland Brothers. The show ran on Australian television from 1976 until 1984.
With the extermination of deer in the South Island of New Zealand by shooters who hunt from helicopters, Ian Atkinson of Hanmer Springs has set up a deer farm to preserve the red deer for generations to see. Capturing the deer from the wilds using a helicopter provide the Leylands with some spectacular action for this program. In answer to many requests to show the Indian-Pacific train, the Leylands take the journey from Port Pirie in South Australia to Perth in Western Australia and show not only the trip, the accommodation, and the facilities on the train, but the behind the scenes activities which keep this hotel on wheels rolling.
